MELAKA: The Melaka government plans to introduce direct flights in and out of Melaka International Airport (LTAM) to Kota Kinabalu and Penang via Firely to boost the state’s tourism sector.

Chief Minister Sulaiman Md Ali said the proposal had been presented to low-cost airline Firefly during a meeting in Seri Negeri here yesterday.

“The meeting is important in the state government’s efforts to entice Firefly to expand its flights to Melaka. Among the routes discussed are Kota Kinabalu-Melaka and Melaka-Penang.

“I believe this meeting will be followed by more in-depth discussions and is expected to boost LTAM’s flight sector and the state’s tourism sector,” he said in a Facebook post.

It was previously reported that LTAM’s operations at Batu Berendam had to be suspended until next year due to the Covid-19 situation and is only expected to resume with the Melaka-Penang route managed by Malindo Air.

The state government is also reported to be in talks with AirAsia after the airline announced its retirement earlier this year.
