GEORGE TOWN: This afternoon, firefighters came to the rescue of about 150 passengers from the popular Penang Hill funicular when the train broke down near the central station.
They helped an old man and the rest of the passengers to walk down the tracks to the lower station.
Train services were interrupted for more than two hours.
A Penang Fire and Rescue spokesman said the department was alerted to the breakdown by one of the passengers who made a distress call at 2.33pm.
“All the stranded passengers were taken to the lower station by walking the funicular line,” he said, Bernama reported.
Penang Hill Corporation said train service resumed at 3.55 pm, after an interruption caused by faulty brakes.
Penang Hill and its funicular is one of the main tourist attractions in the state. The railway is also used by residents, workers, and staff of government offices and shops there.
