MIRI: A fearsome-looking gharial is reportedly on the loose in the vicinity of a residential area in Miri and a recreational park next door.

Wildlife officials from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) said on Wednesday (September 2) they were now looking for him at the site, about 2 km from the city center.

This follows alerts from members of the public who stumbled upon the creature, a crocodile with a long, thin snout.

The SFC’s state wildlife controller, Zolkipli Mohamad Aton, said his Miri SFC unit had been alerted.

“It’s a gharial. We have deployed our SFC rangers to the site.

“However, we are still looking and we cannot find it,” he said.

The gharial was first spotted inside a drain in the Piasau Jaya housing estate on Tuesday night and SFC received an alert via social media.

The gharial is estimated to be 2 to 3 m long from tip of snout to tail.

The urbanization is adjacent to Bulatan Park, which is a large recreation site with a huge lake.

There are large monsoon drains linking the development to the park.
