Ronnie Liu says he posted a photo of the Thai protests two weeks ago, before the controversy over the government’s proposal to declare a state of emergency.

PETALING JAYA: DAP Leader and Sungai Pelek Assemblyman Ronnie Liu has clarified that a post on his Facebook page was not related to the current political situation in Malaysia, after he was arrested for sedition today.

Liu has since been released on police bail and told the FMT that he has not yet been informed of any charges.

“My post on FB went up two weeks ago and has nothing to do with the current situation in Malaysia. The recent controversy on the issue of the emergency was only raised in the media last Sunday.

“As a responsible politician, I always defend the principle of constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy. I always respect the institution of the Malaysian rulers. “

Liu was detained by Bukit Aman officers after arriving at the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters for questioning this morning.

He is being investigated for his Facebook post, which is said to be seditious towards Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The post contained a photo of demonstrations in Thailand with the caption: “Now in Bangkok. They are saying no to the King ”.

Bukit Aman CID chief Huzir Mohamed said investigations were being carried out under Section 4 (1) of the Sedition Law for inciting hatred against a ruler or government.

It also said that investigations were underway under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act of 1998 for improper use of network facilities.
