JOHOR BARU: A 39-year-old man was sentenced to two years in prison after a Court of Sessions found him guilty of abusing his teenage son.

Sessions Judge Kamarudin Kamsun rendered the decision after the court accepted the prosecution’s case on Monday (September 28).

The defendant, G. Viswanathan, who used to work in Singapore, remained calm as the judge read that the court found him guilty of physically hurting his son three years ago when he was 13 years old.

According to the charge sheet, the father of three had committed the act at a home in Taman Perling here between February and August 2017.

He was charged under Section 31 (1) (a) of the Children’s Act 2001.

Viswanathan’s lawyer, Mathan Anandaram, asked for a lighter sentence, citing that the defendant was supporting his family.

In response, Deputy Prosecutor Farah Aqilah Ahmad Fuad asked the court to pass a harsh sentence as a lesson to Viswanathan and the public.

After Kamarudin imposed the two-year prison sentence, Mathan asked the court to allow a stay of execution pending an appeal in High Court.

Kamarudin allowed the stay and increased the bond amount from RM20,000 with one bond to RM40,000 with two bonds.

He also ordered the defendant to hand over his passport to the court.
