Father collapses in court, admits attempted murder of toddler

PETALING JAYA: A 27-year-old man burst into tears when he admitted in the Court of Sessions here to a charge of attempted murder of his 20-month-old daughter by stabbing the baby in her stomach.

Muhammad Safwan Shafie pleaded guilty to the assassination attempt that resulted in a 5cm laceration to the baby’s stomach.

When the police court showed him photos of the crime scene and the victim for identification purposes, Safwan, who worked in an auto accessories store, collapsed and sobbed.

“I admit it,” he said here on Thursday (December 17).

Sessions Court Judge Mohammed Mokhzani Mokhtar sentenced him to 10 years in prison and ordered the jail time to run from the date of arrest on December 12.

According to the charge sheet, Safwan attempted to murder the victim by stabbing her in a house in Flat Puchong Permai, Puchong here at 4.30 pm on December 12.

He was charged under article 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

Before sentencing, the defendant, who was not represented, said he was sorry and asked for a lenient sentence.

“I ask for indulgence,” he said through tears.

However, Deputy Prosecutor Farrahin Shapri requested a severe penalty, as the defendant had committed a serious crime and had endangered his own son.

“As a parent, you should be the child’s protector, but in this case, he was the perpetrator.

“The 5 cm wound was serious and could have caused death. The boy stayed with him because he was entrusted with his care, ”he said.

According to the statement of facts, the police had received a complaint on the day of the incident about the defendant who went mad while holding a knife.

The defendant then locked himself in the house with the victim.

The police had to cut the steel fence with the permission of the defendant’s mother and asked him to surrender, but he refused to do so.

When the arrest was made, there was a fight between the accused and eight policemen.

Police managed to seize a 13-inch knife that was used to injure the victim who was already bleeding on the floor at the time.
