FarmVille, one of the most popular mobile games to launch on Facebook, is finally coming to an end. Zynga, the game’s developer, recently said that it would close the blinds on its game on December 31.

Zynga’s decision to finally shut down the game isn’t that surprising and actually has more to do with a key decision with the game’s engine and its developer, Adobe. In 2017, Adobe promised that it would end its Flash software by the end of 2020. While popular at the time, the program was widely recognized as a security and privacy nightmare.
For currently existing players, Zynga said they will be able to keep all of their in-app purchases until November 17. After that, all points, payments, and refunds will be suspended, but players will still be able to play the game until December 31.
FarmVille came onto the scene more than a decade ago, in 2009. At its peak, the game had a monthly user base of 73 million and helped both its parent company and Facebook generate a huge sum of money. However, as time passed, the popularity of Zynga and FarmVille began to wane, and by 2013 the game’s user base had shrunk to a fragment from its glory days.
Add to that Adobe’s promise to end exploit-ridden Flash, it makes sense that Zynga wants to release the game.
