SIBU: The atmosphere was bleak when the family of Irene Chung, who was killed in Taiwan, came home with her ashes at Sibu Airport on Wednesday (November 4) from Taipei.

They had transited KL International Airport and Kuching International Airport before finally landing in Sibu at 6.10pm on Wednesday (November 4), where they underwent a swab test.

Before that, they had already done a swab test at KLIA.

Chung’s parents, Desmond Chung and Ting Ching Ching, were dressed in black.

Ting was the only one who heard crying. His eldest son, Daniel, followed him by carrying the urn containing Chung’s ashes.

The family did not speak to anyone and was immediately taken to a car that took them to Nirvana Memorial Park to have the urn placed in the columbarium.

Among those waiting for them at the airport were members of the Sibu Hakka Association, led by their advisor, Kapitan Connie Loh; members of Wesley Methodist Church and Chief Minister’s Political Secretary Michael Tiang.

The family’s attorney, Yap Hoi Liong, said the family would like to thank the State Disaster Management Committee headed by Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah for granting them a special five-day funeral service at Nirvana Memorial Park.

“After the funeral, they will observe the 14-day quarantine period at home,” he said.

Yap added that the church’s funeral would be held on a date to be decided soon.

“They will also hold a press conference after that,” he said.

The couple had flown to Taiwan on October 30 following news of their daughter’s death. Chung, 24, a student at Chiang Jung Christian University in Tainan, Taiwan, was found dead on October 29 and a suspect has confessed to the murder.

According to a CNA report, the suspect admitted to killing Chung by strangulation and then disposing of his body. CNA reported that the victim had been kidnapped.

They found her missing on the night of October 28. Police arrested a suspect named Liang the next day.
