KUCHING: Chief Minister (Infrastructure) Fadillah Yusof has welcomed his appointment as joint chairman in the negotiation process between the Sarawak and Petronas government.
He saw it as a sign of the federal government’s commitment to solving oil and gas (O&G) management problems, as well as the sales tax on petroleum products between the two parties.
“As the Prime Minister announced, the consensus reached would provide space for the Sarawak government to jointly participate in the development of the state’s oil and gas industry with Petronas, without changing Petronas’ role as the oil company of the nation, “said Fadillah. who is also the minister of works, in a statement today.
Muhyiddin announced today that Fadillah and Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz will jointly chair the negotiating committee between the Sarawak government and Petronas to resolve the problems.
The Sarawak and Petronas government issued a joint statement earlier today saying they had reached a friendly settlement on the management of oil and gas assets and the sales tax on petroleum products in the state.
The statement also said that both sides agreed that the best approach to reaching a friendly settlement was through a trade agreement to create a stable trading and investment environment.
Fadillah, who is also a deputy for Petra Jaya, said that the negotiations leading to the friendly settlement showed that the government always had the best interests of the people in mind.
“This is the good news that Sarawakians have been waiting for and is in line with Sarawak rights, as enshrined in the 1963 Malaysian Agreement (MA63),” he said.
