It’s not every day that a Malaysian car brand is seen in a Hollywood movie. Particularly in the new Netflix action movie “Extraction”, Proton cars had been featured multiple times in the movie as a pleasant surprise to us Malays.

We contacted Netflix to ask the creators of “Extraction” about the use of protons in the film, and we got a quote from the director himself, Sam Hargrave.

“During our explorers to Dhaka, Bangladesh and all of India, we saw many Proton cars on the streets. To be as authentic as possible, we wanted to make sure that Proton cars were showcased throughout the film. There were even some police vehicles in Dhaka, Bangladesh that were made by Proton. So we also wanted to be authentic. So it was about trying to be as honest and authentic as possible for the region, ”said Hargrave.

The film takes place in Bangladesh, where PHP Automobiles assembles five types of vehicles, including Proton Saga, Proton Preve, Proton Exora, Proton X70, and Proton Persona at its factory. PHP also mentioned that former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamad (who was also the president of Proton) insisted and asked PHP to get involved in the car business and invited to visit the Proton car factory in Malaysia. This would explain why cars are commonly seen in the shooting range, as mentioned by Hargrave.

“Extraction”, about a black market mercenary tasked with rescuing the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord, starring Chris Hemsworth, and written by Joseph Russo of the Russo Brothers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fame. Director Sam Hargrave is best known as a stunt coordinator for various films in the MCU, and this film was his directorial debut.

You can watch the movie on Netflix.
