PUTRAJAYA: A former official from a telecommunications company was sent to preventive detention for four days from today to assist in the investigation of a corruption case involving a short message systems (SMS) fraud syndicate.

His arrest brought the number of people detained in this case so far to 13.

The remand order was issued by Judge Shah Wira Abdul Halim at Putrajaya Magistrates Court here following a request from the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

According to sources, the 45-year-old suspect was arrested at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya around 10:30 p.m. Sunday after he came forward to have his statement recorded.

The sources also said the individual is believed to have offered and received bribes in order to obtain personal information from prepaid customers.

The obtained phone numbers would then be used by the fraud syndicate’s content provider to collect subscription fees via SMS without users’ knowledge and consent, the sources said.

The case is being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act of 2009.
