PETALING JAYA: A Sarawak deputy minister said today that any emergency declaration would not involve a military government or impose restrictions on economic activities.

Saratok MP Ali Biju said people will not be burdened by any emergency declaration, adding that traders will continue to work as usual.

“Taxi drivers will still be able to drive and the Tan Sris can still invest in the stock market.

“Only Parliament would be suspended, political activities would be limited and aspiring superheroes cannot scare anyone with their strong, compelling and formidable ‘superpowers,” he said in a statement.

Ali, who took over as undersecretary for Energy and Natural Resources after Perikatan Nasional assumed command of the federal administration, said he did not agree with the statement by former Attorney General Tommy Thomas yesterday that an emergency declaration would be unconstitutional.

Ali said that as a previously trained engineer, the profession had taught him to build a “failsafe emergency or pause button” on any device configured to ensure there is a safety function.

“My engineering logic tells me that to disagree with an Emergency means to agree to a general election during a devastating pandemic.

And so Tommy’s legal language simply defies the rational logic of an engineer.

“Let’s all be rational and reasonable people for once and hit the ‘pause button,'” Ali said, adding that political leaders on both sides of the political divide should reduce their politicking and focus on efforts to fight Covid. -19 and boost the economy.

On Friday, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and some cabinet members met with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah at Istana Abdul Aziz in Kuantan and presented their proposals to the King. However, the nature of these proposals was not disclosed.

The King will meet with other state rulers in Istana Negara today on Muhyiddin’s proposals.
