KUALA LUMPUR: An Englishman who violated his quarantine order to visit a bank in Bangsar three months ago here was sentenced to two days in jail and fined RM5,000 by the Magistrates Court here today.

Judge Mohammad Aizat Abdul Rahim sentenced John Alan Forsyrh, 64, after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court also ordered that Forsyrh, an engineer, be jailed for another two months if he did not pay the fine.

Forsyrh was charged with disobeying an order under Section 15 (1) of the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Act of 1988 and violating Section 22 (b) of the same law at 1.50 pm on July 20.

He was charged under Section 24 (a) of the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Act of 1988 (Act 342), which establishes a maximum jail sentence of two years, a fine, or both.

Earlier, Forsyrh’s lawyer, Muhammad Syafiq Salleh, pleaded that his client not be jailed on the grounds that he had cooperated with the authorities while in detention.

“The defendant has served for more than 20 years in Malaysia and is now older and lives alone here while his family is in England,” he said.

However, Deputy Prosecutor Abdul Khaliq Nazeri urged the court to impose a sentence that reflected the seriousness of the crime.

“The prosecution requests an appropriate punishment as a lesson not only for the defendants but for the general public to adhere to the quarantine order,” he said.Named
