IPOH: The government will study and redefine the context of socio-economic and environmental sustainability in its post-Covid-19 economic recovery framework.
Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz (pix) said the study will cover aspects of legislation, policies, education and awareness programs to ensure balanced development and well-being of people.
“Many people view sustainable practices as an unnecessary cost without realizing that they can reduce much higher costs caused by external factors.
“Currently, the criteria for a successful business do not take into account the impact or cost to the environment and society in an integral way. Awareness on this issue is still low and needs to be increased, “he said in a statement after attending the ministry’s 2021 budget consultation tour for Perak yesterday.
He said that a sustainable business must be strategically planned and implemented to create value for all stakeholders, from customers to consumer-level suppliers and local and international investors.
In this regard, he said that the government is committed to ensuring that the sustainability aspect is emphasized in the 2021 Budget, in addition to achieving Malaysia’s own environmental sustainability roadmap for 2030 and several of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
“We have to understand and distinguish the connection between human and economic survival with environmental sustainability. Threats like floods, landslides, disease outbreaks, etc. can occur if we are not aware.
“And the government has to spend more to rebuild and protect lives. Therefore, prevention is better than cure, as it is generally simpler and more cost effective, ”he said.
On today’s program, Tengku Zafrul said that he attended a dialogue session with representatives of the palm oil industry in Ipoh and environmental NGOs in the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve in Kuala Sepetang, Taiping.
Discussions focused on the need for dynamic policy, resource support, and potential collaboration regarding the sustainability agenda in the 2021 Budget.
In another development, the minister said that Perak received around RM1.69 billion for its residents through the Prihatin Rakyat (Prihatin) Economic Stimulus Package while businesses in the state received RM1.3 billion through the National Plan. of Economic Recovery (Penjana).
He said that the federal government had also funneled RM7.36 million in assistance through small projects. – Named
