KOTA KINABALU: Public officials must play a role in accelerating economic growth, which is now severely affected by the spread of Covid-19, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.
He said that public servants must eliminate the bureaucracy that makes it difficult for people to recover their socio-economy and their lives.
They must also think and act in innovative ways to solve the problems people face, he said in his speech at a meeting with Sabah federal public officials at the International Convention Center here today.
Also present were the Minister of Education, Dr. Mohd Radzi Md Jidin, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Datuk Seri, Dr. Ronald Kiandee, the Minister of the Interior Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun and the Federal Secretary of Sabah Datuk Samsuni Mohd Nor.
Muhyiddin said that public officials must understand that the management of the Covid-19 pandemic must be balanced between maintaining public health and ensuring the economic stability of the country.
He said that the important thing at this time was to generate the country’s economy, which in turn could open up more job opportunities for the community.
“The main issue is how to reactivate the economy, how to preserve people’s source of income. It’s about livelihoods, health, and also the economy. We must help our people.
“The tourism sector is severely affected (by Covid-19) and the country’s borders remain closed. But there are signs of recovery when hotels are fully booked, not by foreigners but by locals. That is the role of our people in helping the economic sector, ”he said.
As one of the leading countries in containing Covid-19, Muhyiddin emphasized that Malaysia could not be left behind in recovering its economy after Covid-19.
Muhyiddin said that the spread of Covid-19 had taught people many things, including the need for effective digitization measures to help people get on with their lives and generate income.
For example, he said, high-speed internet is needed to aid online learning and marketing.
He said that the government through the 12th Malaysia Plan (2021-2025) would implement the National Digital Network (Jendela) in an effort to improve digital communications in the country where Sabah was one of the states that would benefit greatly from the plan.
Meanwhile, Muhyiddin said, the federal government had never neglected Sabah and a total of 22 billion ringgit had been allocated to develop the state’s socioeconomics, including the industrial, educational, tourism and agricultural sectors.
However, he said, it would be better if the Sabah government aligned itself with its federal administration, because according to him, working as a team will have a greater impact in several respects. – Named
