The 10th-generation Honda Civic FC we have now was first introduced just over five years ago, which is enough time for us to expect an all-new model to be on the way. We know this to be true as there have been numerous shots of the 11th Gen Civic tested in Thailand and Europe.
While those photos give us an idea of what the next Civic would look like, the camouflage and possibly the fake body panels applied on the prototypes mask its final design a bit. Fortunately we now have patent images from IP Australia (1, 2), which were discovered by the Civic11 and CivicXI forums, to help put the puzzle together a bit better.
Here are two sets of images, one showing the sedan version of the new Civic, while the other is the hatchback. These two body styles are already available with the 10th generation model, although there are rumors that Honda will not bring back a coupe version.
Starting with the sedan, we find a familiar face up front, with the brand’s Solid Wing Face grille flanked by redesigned headlights and signature daytime running lights. The lower apron also ditches the large dummy corner intakes of the previous model in favor of less pronounced ones, and is kept separate from the lower intake by a body-colored structure.
Viewed from the side, it looks like the next Civic will sport more vertical A-pillars, along with a profile reminiscent of the Accord. In fact, even the window line closely mimics the larger D-segment model, as seen in the raised portion just above the fuel door.
Focusing on the rear, the former C-shaped (or affectionately known as Crab) the rear lights have been replaced by angle groups. You’ll also notice that the trunk has been slightly extended here, with the reflectors positioned higher up, while the decorative vents have been thinned out and relocated to the base of the bumper.
As for the hatchback, it has the same front end as your sedan and is obviously different more towards the rear. Along the sides, we can see that the window trim now extends a bit further back to meet the tailgate latch lines, but the biggest changes are at the rear.
Like the sedan, the taillights have been significantly remodeled but with a different design that incorporates a light bar that links the two groups. This also sees the end of the secondary spoiler running through the rear window on the current model, while the lower apron doesn’t differ too much from its older brother.
Based on these patents, it’s clear the Civic is ready for another radical overhaul, but other details of its platform, technology, and engines remain a mystery. In terms of engines, we should get the usual mix of gasoline and diesel power plants, with the possibility of hybrid options or even plug-in hybrids. Certain shots also suggest a high-performance Type R sedan model, something that wasn’t offered with the 10th generation – the current Civic Type R is just a hatchback.
It is reported that Honda will introduce the 11th-generation Civic later this year, although the automaker has not disclosed an exact date. However, these patents give us an early idea of what to expect. You like what you see? Are the new designs better than the 10th generation model? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
