KOTA KINABALU: An eight-year-old boy was killed in a crocodile attack while swimming with a friend in a river in Lahad Datu.
Lahad Datu OCPD Asst Comm Rohan Shah Ahmad said the boy was swimming in Sungai Sabah Baru with a friend when the reptile attacked at 1.30pm on Thursday.
“The friend, also an eight-year-old boy, immediately swam to shore and ran to the victim’s father who was nearby to seek help after seeing the attack,” he said yesterday.
He said a search was then organized for the victim and that he was found around 3:30 p.m., not far from where he was last seen.
“There were serious injuries to the boy’s body, including the waist, chest and stomach,” said ACP Rohan, adding that the boy’s body had been sent for an autopsy.
This is the second crocodile attack reported in Sabah in the past week.
On December 4, a teenager was injured when he was attacked by the reptile at Sungai Mengkabong in Tuaran.
The 16-year-old escaped death thanks to his six friends who teamed up to beat up the crocodile and drive it away.
Traps have been set to catch the reptile.
