ALOR SETAR: Eight people under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) received a seven-day detention by the Alor Setar Magistrates Court on Thursday, May 14.
MACC State Director Datuk Shaharom Nizam Abd Manap said the suspects were arrested for filing fictitious claims on the supply of machine parts totaling more than $ 43,000 (RM186,000) between August 2019 and October of 2019.
“They were sent to facilitate investigations under Section 18 of the 2009 MACC Act,” it said in a statement.
According to Section 24 (2) of the same Law, suspects convicted of the crime are subject to a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of five times the value of the crime committed or RM10,000, whichever is greater.
“The eight include five employees from an engineering team at a government-linked factory, as well as three others from two companies,” Shaharom said.
Seven of the suspects are Malaysian and one is Filipino, all aged between 39 and 45 years.
The individuals were detained separately at a factory in Kulim, at the Kulim Hi-Tech MACC office and at the MACC state headquarters.
