SIBU: Eight customs officers have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the smuggling of 520 items, including illicit liquors worth RM1.46 thousand into the Rejang Port Authority here.

State Customs Director Herman Shah Abdullah said the seizure took place during Ops Undikar at around 12:40 pm on October 23.

He said the 12,173 liters of spirits from various brands were placed inside 19 units of containers.

“Eight customs officers who made the declaration were detained to assist in the investigations,” it said in a statement on Thursday (November 19).

He said the containers were taken to the Sibu Customs Department on Deshon Road.

On the modus operandi, Herman said that the agents and the importer had declared the liquor as a mixed product from China under the non-taxable tariff code or the lowest tax rate.

“The items were also reported as console items with inaccurate quantities to avoid higher taxes. Items that required import permits, such as building materials and liquor, are hidden and covered with other items to confuse customs officials during inspections. “, said.

“However, the control team carried out a thorough inspection and found that some items were under-declared in terms of quantity.

“Liquors of various brands that required an import permit were not declared in accordance with the requirements of the Customs (Import Ban) Order 2017,” he said.

The case is being investigated pursuant to Section 133 (1) (a) and Section 135 (1) (a) of the Customs Act of 1967.
