KUALA LUMPUR: The Electoral Commission has started holding discussions on the procedure for a partial election for the seat of the Chini state assembly in Pahang after the assemblyman’s death on Thursday.
EC President Azhar Azizan Harun said talks were held with officials from the National Security Council, the National Disaster Management Agency, the health ministry and the police.
Chini’s constituency was vacated after Abu Bakar Harun, 60, of Barisan Nasional died of a heart attack on Thursday. The vacancy notice was delivered to the EC on Friday.
A partial election must be made within 60 days of the vacancy.
Azhar said that if the restrictions under the conditional movement control order were still in effect at the time, procedures such as social distancing, the use of face masks and hand sanitizers, and temperature controls would apply.
The CMCO’s current restrictions have been extended until June 12.
The Chini constituency is a green zone area without any Covid-19 cases. Azhar expected the area to remain a green zone until the end of the midterm elections. “We don’t want the green zone to become a red zone because of the partial election.”
The Chini state seat, which is part of the Pekan constituency, was won by Abu Bakar with a majority of 4,622 votes against PAS candidate Mohd Fadhil Noor (5,405 votes) and PKR candidate Mohamad Razali Ithnain ( 1,065 votes).
