PUTRAJAYA: The Compliance Agency’s Integrity Commission (EAIC) takes seriously the incident in which a suspect under investigation managed to flee from the authorities.

President Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan said the commission is taking the necessary steps on the matter, including opening an investigative document on the incident.

“We have already started initial investigations into the matter under Section 28 of the EAIC Act,” he said on Friday (October 16).

Mohd Sidek also said that the EAIC will release the next course of action to take regarding this matter as stipulated in the law.

On October 11, a suspected member of a Macau online gambling and scam syndicate who was out on bail from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) disappeared to avoid being arrested again by the police.

He and eight other people had spent several days in MACC pre-trial detention and that day they were taken to court to have the pre-trial detention order lifted and were taken back to the commission’s headquarters for the bail process.

The police were there to re-arrest the suspects to assist in the investigation of the same case and were waiting at the main gates of MACC headquarters for the process of arresting the suspects.

The suspect, after bail was posted and the documentation process completed, was turned over to his guarantor.

A MACC officer had escorted him to a waiting vehicle that departed after he got in.

However, according to sources, along the way to the front door, the suspect could have gotten out of the vehicle and fled with the help of two bodyguards to avoid being detained again by the police.

The MACC had questioned more than a dozen people, including senior police officers in its investigations into the racket, who are believed to have received protection from certain authorities.

Hundreds of accounts with millions of ringgit have been frozen while a fleet of luxury cars has been seized in the course of the investigation.
