KUALA LUMPUR: The use of drones since Operation “Op Benteng” was activated in June has allowed authorities to successfully detect 55 cases of intrusions on the country’s borders, says Security Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said the detection, which also led to several arrests, demonstrated the effectiveness of the technology.
“The use of drone technology is very important because the country needs to maintain vigilance along its borders, for example in Sabah waters.
“That is why we use drone technology in border areas, even on the ground,” he said during his daily press conference in Wisma Pertahanan here.
Ismail said the government had acquired various assets, including scrambler motorcycles, ATVs, radars and drones for use during Op Benteng, especially in the northern part of the peninsula.
He said that the acquisitions were made through special provisions of the National Security Council to strengthen national border control.
“The government will continue to enhance its assets to control the borders of the country under Op Benteng,” he said.
