KUALA LUMPUR: A second total lockdown will cause irreparable damage to the business sector and the economy, with a devastating impact on business survival and job security, according to the Federation of Manufacturers of Malaysia (FMM).

He urged industries to cooperate fully and play their role by taking additional preventive and proactive measures to enforce existing standard operating procedures (SOPs) in the workplace and employee homes.

“Industries are deeply alarmed by the warning from the Ministry of Health that the country’s health system is at a breaking point due to the overwhelming number of active Covid-19 cases.

“We are equally concerned by the latest updates that there are currently 318 active Covid groups, of which 99 are from the manufacturing sector,” FMM President Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai said yesterday in a statement.

He said that in light of this, FMM has issued another reminder to all its members about the additional measures that need to be taken to protect its workforce and contain the spread of infections.

Soh said that since shelters and worker housing have been identified as a breeding ground for Covid-19, there is an urgent need for employers to pay greater attention to the living conditions of all workers and ensure that they They meet strict SOPs, including the requirement for physical distancing. in the living environment.

He said this would also include imposing the same requirements on the living conditions of contract workers and complying with the government’s directive for all foreign workers to be screened.

“Mass testing has proven to be a very effective approach to detecting positive cases and activating the necessary protocols that would ensure rapid action and minimal disruption to operations.”

He said that the capacity of vehicles or buses to transport workers should be kept at 50% or less to ensure that physical distance is maintained in such vehicles while transporting workers.

In addition, he said companies should appoint members of management to ensure that SOPs are strictly adhered to in the workplace, including during breaks and meals.

“Isolate suspected or positive Covid-19 cases at a dedicated point similar to a self-quarantine area, away from other workers, and immediately notify the nearest state or district health departments.

“Advocate for a ‘safe work bubble’ for employees by monitoring and limiting employee movement to a minimum. Daily trips should be limited to moving from home to work and vice versa, ”he said.
