PETALING JAYA: An official announcement on standard operating procedures (SOP) for Chinese New Year will be announced soon, says Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong.
The transport minister said the prime minister has heeded the concerns and disappointment expressed by various quarters over the recently announced SOP.
“The government has heard your voice. This concern can be resolved in a safe and SOP-compliant manner. Let’s all be patient and allow the official announcement to be made soon, ”he said in an Instagram post on Sunday (February 7).
In the image, the president of the MCA is seen having a virtual meeting with more than 20 people in his office.
On Thursday (February 4), the government announced the SOP, which stipulated that only those living under the same roof could be present for the reunion dinner and prayers.
This sparked an uproar within the Chinese community, especially among those whose relatives live nearby.
Furthermore, prayers in temples are also not allowed except for five of the temple committee members, while lion dances, lantern processions, Chingay and other theatrical performances are prohibited, as are cross-border travel.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob later said that he was puzzled by the criticism of the SOP as, according to him, talks were held with the respective religious and cultural bodies.
However, the groups that attended the meetings said they were not informed of the eventual decision, as they were only there to give their opinions.
They had said they were caught off guard with the SOP that was announced.
