KUCHING: Various Movement Control Orders (MCOs) are still being enforced across the country to curb the spread of Covid-19, Local Government and Housing Minister Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Hian said today.

According to him, the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) is in effect throughout the country until March 31 of this year to allow the country to break the chain of Covid-19 infection.

Under the Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control Act of 1988 (Law 342), he said that the Minister of Health is empowered to impose various MCOs amid the current pandemic in the country.

“Under this Act, they (the federal government) can declare CMCO (Conditional Motion Control Order), EMCO (Enhanced Motion Control Order) and RMCO,” he told The Borneo Post on New Years Day.

He also shared an order dated December 31, 2020, signed by Health Minister Datuk Seri, Dr. Adham Baba, who had decided to enforce the various MCOs until March 31 of this year.

The RMCO, previously declared by the prime minister, was supposed to end on December 31 last year.

While the RMCO was implemented nationwide from September 1 to December 31 of last year, some states, including Selangor and Sabah, were under the application of CMCO in light of the growing number of Covid-19 infections registered.

In a Facebook post today, Dr. Sim said: “Once Law 342 is declared nationally, the Sarawak Public Health Ordinance will be executed at the same time.”

The president of the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) called the decision to extend the RMCO and CMCO in certain states as wise.

He felt the worst is yet to come when it comes to Covid-19 infections in Peninsular Malaysia.

Therefore, Dr. Sim called on all Sarawakians to remain vigilant and strong until vaccines are available earlier this year.

“No matter how tired, exhausted, fatigued, stressed, frustrated… we must all be vigilant, do not give up, especially the end of the pandemic is in sight! #stayalive, ”reads an excerpt from the post on social media.

He advised all Sarawakians to play their role seriously, given that no one is immune to Covid-19.

“Together, we will overcome Covid-19 stronger,” added Dr. Sim.
