PETALING JAYA: Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Photo) He says he accepts with an open heart the criticism of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad of his idea of forming a party focused on youth.
The Muar deputy, who was the minister of youth and sports under the Pakatan Harapan administration, thanked Dr. Mahathir for the comments.
“Thank you, Tun. We accept criticism with open hearts,” he said in a post on Twitter on Thursday (September 3).
Syed Saddiq’s tweet was in response to comments made by Dr. Mahathir, who said he had doubts that the newly proposed youth-focused political party would succeed in winning the support of the people at the polls.
“Although the youth represent a very large portion among the electorates, it is not enough for the party to win (the elections).
“In any constituency, there are old and young among the electorates,” said the Langkawi MP.
He said that a political party should broadly appeal to people of all ages.
“We (Pejuang) are also going to attract young people (in the elections). Therefore, it is difficult for him (Syed Saddiq and his new youth party) to be successful,” said Dr. Mahathir.
Syed Saddiq in his reply also said that “this is a youth-led party for all Malaysians.”
“The majority of those who will lead will be young technocrats, professionals, entrepreneurs, modern farmers, civil society leaders and others.
“We may be young, but we love Malaysia,” he said.
Syed Saddiq had said, prior to this, that the new party would be inspired by the French En Marche and the now-defunct Future Forward Party (FFP) of Thailand.
