PETALING JAYA: Former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad said he will “wait and see” if opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has enough support to form a new government.
Anwar said today that he has “strong, formidable and compelling” support among MPs, and TheEdge Singapore reported that Dr. Mahathir said this was not the first time his former MP had made such claims.
“We will have to wait to see if this is another episode of making unsubstantiated claims,” he said at an online summit ahead of Anwar’s announcement.
In 2008, Anwar claimed that he had enough parliamentary support to overthrow the government and urged then-Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to resign from power peacefully.
Anwar then said that he failed after Abdullah rejected his proposal to convene a special Dewan Rakyat session.
The PKR president said today that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had agreed to grant him a hearing, although this had to be postponed after the King was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN).
He said that the only discretion to dissolve Parliament was with Yang di-Pertuan Agong and that he had spoken to the King by phone.
