LANGKAWI (Bernama): Langkawi Tun MP Dr. Mahathir Mohamad says that he will not participate in the next general elections if they are held as scheduled, as he would be 98 at the time.
However, the former prime minister said he would be willing to offer advice and share his experiences with members of his party, Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang).
He told reporters this when he met at his Langkawi MP service center here on Saturday (September 26).
When asked if it was necessary to dissolve Parliament for general elections to take place after the latest political development in the country, Dr. Mahathir said that the Covid-19 pandemic situation posed a threat to the plan.
“Under normal circumstances, it can be (dissolved) because the general elections give the people power to decide who becomes the government. But right now, the country is facing the problem of Covid-19, this problem causes the cost of keeping the general election to be high and it also exposes people to the spread of the disease.
“I am sure that if the general elections are held now, many people will be affected by Covid-19, many will die. The question is whether we give priority to politics or the lives of the people,” he added. – Bernama
