PETALANDO JAYA: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad (Photo) says it has suggestions for reviving the ailing tourism industry in Langkawi, its parliamentary constituency

In a blog post about www.chedet.cc On Wednesday (November 4), the Langkawi MP said that the government should listen to the problems of small businesses that are suffering financially due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I have just returned from Langkawi, which is a Covid-19 green zone, after a three-day trip.

“When I was there, the situation was grim. The movement control order (MCO) imposed on Langkawi has severely affected the tourism industry.

“There are only a few flights to Langkawi from Subang and Sepang every day.

“Businessmen are complaining, many stores have closed, some temporarily, some permanently.

“There are many ways and proposals made to fix Langkawi’s economy. However, to this day, there has been no government approval. Perhaps it is due to the pandemic.

“However, if properly planned with Covid-19 standard operating procedures in mind, tourism and other industries can be fixed.

“This can not only be done without the government allocation, but you will also be able to contribute to government funds.

“I am concerned about the long-term effects on the Langkawi economy.

“Maybe the government can listen to the pleas of small entrepreneurs and consider. I’ll keep coming up with ideas if that helps,” Dr. Mahathir said.
