KUALA LUMPUR: Failure to pass the 2021 budget would plunge the nation into a political crisis resulting in the election of an unstable government, says Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad (Photo).
“We all want this Budget to pass. If it is not passed, it is common for the Prime Minister to resign. This will lead to a political crisis.”
“The current ‘backdoor government’ would be replaced by a government that is unstable,” he said while debating the 2021 budget at the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (November 12).
Dr. Mahathir also attacked those who want snap elections to be held “simply to seize power,” reminding MPs that Sabah state polls led to many Covid-19 cases and deaths in the state.
“If we previously managed to reduce the pandemic, now we are facing the second and third waves that have more than 1,000 infections a day,” he said.
Dr. Mahathir said that based on the current situation, he does not believe that the current government can overcome the Covid-19 pandemic.
He also said that his Parti Pejuang Tanah Air, which has not yet registered, has four independent deputies and reserves the right to support or reject the budget.
Both the opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the president of the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC), Datuk Seri Najib Razak, had declared their conditional support for the 2021 Budget that was presented in Parliament last Friday (November 6).
Several Umno lawmakers had also called for snap elections to be held prior to the start of Dewan Rakyat on November 2 as a way to resolve the political stalemate affecting the current administration.
