Dr. M doubts Syed Saddiq’s youth-centric party can win in polls

PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad says he does not trust the new youth-focused party proposed by Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman to succeed in the general election.

The former prime minister said that while the new youth-focused party could garner substantial support from the youth, it probably wouldn’t be enough to win.

“I do not think it will be very successful because although young people are a large part of the electorate, it is not enough that people win just because they have the support of the youth,” he said at a press conference in the Perdana Leadership. Foundation on Thursday (September 3).

Dr. Mahathir said this when asked to comment on the Muar MP’s plan to establish a new youth-focused party.

The former youth and sports minister had said that the party, yet to be named or formed, would be inspired by the French En Marche and Thailand’s now-defunct Future Forward Party (FFP).

The new group, Syed Saddiq added, would be made up of young technocrats, professionals and politicians, who would ensure that “the voice of youth dominates in Parliament and outside of Parliament.”

“In any constituency there will be older people and there will be young people.

“We are going to appeal to young people as well,” said Dr. Mahathir.

“If you only attract young people, it will be difficult for you to succeed,” he added.

However, Dr. Mahathir said that Malaysia was a free country and Syed Saddiq was free “to do things on his own”.

“He used to be a strong supporter of Pakatan Harapan, but now he feels that he needs to separate from us,” said Dr. Mahathir, adding that he still had good relations with Syed Saddiq.

“We have no problem if the goal is to fight corruption and things like that,” added the former prime minister.
