PETALING JAYA: Former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad criticized opposition MPs for not pushing for a bloc vote on the budget, saying they had “broken their promise to the rakyat.”
In a blog post, the Langkawi MP said that he and his three other MPs from Pejuang will continue to oppose the budget.
“A government established through corruption and bribery of parliamentarians could suddenly be supported by opposition MPs without a shred of blame because they have broken their promise to the people.
“This is what happened today in Dewan Rakyat,” he said.
In the meantime, he said that all Pejuang MPs had stood up to reject the 2021 budget as the party previously promised.
“When we take a position, we don’t give in on the basis of our trust and responsibility as representatives of the people.
“We stand firm against any form of corruption and we hope that people are also aware and reject corruption. Only by rejecting corruption can the destruction of the country be avoided, ”added Mahathir.
The federal budget was approved at the policy stage in the Dewan Rakyat today after a majority of the deputies present supported it by voice vote.
Dewan Rakyat Chairman Azhar Azizan Harun announced the result of the voice vote on the Supply (Budget) Bill 2021 after Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz presented it for the second reading.
The approval of the budget indicates that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin still has majority support in the Dewan Rakyat to continue leading the nation.
However, Amanah’s Mahfuz Omar, who was unhappy with the voice vote, stood up requesting a block vote, but the measure was unsuccessful and only 12 other MPs stood up to support him, when the minimum requirement it was 15 deputies.
The decision of the majority of the opposition MPs to opt for an individual vote for the approval of the budget has raised doubts, while the party leaders and the deputies appear to be silent on the matter.
