BORUSSIA DORTMUND have fired coach Lucien Favre after the club’s 5-1 win at Stuttgart.
Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has already established himself among the top favorites to take over the Bundesliga giants.
Favre had guided BVB to the knockout stages of the Champions League, but poor domestic form had put him under pressure.
And the club’s humiliating loss to newly promoted Stuttgart at HOME has proven to be the last straw.
Favre himself had called the loss, the fourth this season, a “disaster.”
The result compounded Dortmund’s poor start to the season, which has included three defeats in their last five games.
The Westfalenstadion team is now fifth in the league, already five points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
And Favre, who only had six months left on his contract with Dortmund, has now paid the price.
The 63-year-old took over for the Black and Yellows in May 2018 after taking a two-year hiatus from his career.
Athletic’s assistant coach, Edin Terzic, will now take over until the end of the year.
While Borussia Monchengladback boss Marco Rose and RB Salzburg’s Jesse Marsch have also been named as potential targets.
Meanwhile, Pochettino is likely to be one of the pioneers having been out of work for over a year since he was fired by Tottenham.
Since then, the Argentine has been linked to a number of jobs including Manchester United, Real Madrid and Zenit St Petersburg.
