KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat fell into disarray when procedures were abruptly halted after an evacuation warning on Tuesday (December 1) … but it may have been due to a faulty water sprayer.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun, had told the deputies to temporarily leave the House.

Media staff and other staff members also left the media room and offices for a short period.

Later, a security official told some journalists not to leave the facility, adding that there could have been a “technical problem.”

Security personnel told the media and other officers to wait outside the Parliament building.

Several ministers, including the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, and the Minister of National Unity, Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique, as well as Dewan Rakyat’s Vice President, Datuk Seri Mohd Rashid Hasnon, were seen waiting outside.

When approached outside the building, Saifuddin said that Parliament had been postponed for a time until further notice from the Parliament administration.

Several minutes later, instructions were given to re-enter the Parliament building, after which MPs, ministers, officials and media personnel returned.

A bell was rung around 10.30am, indicating that lawmakers could return to the House.

It is understood that there was a faulty water sprayer that triggered the entire episode.
