PETALING JAYA: American playwright Lorraine Hansberry said that what makes you exceptional, if you are, is inevitably makes you feel lonely.

And that seems to be true for Pandelela Rinong, who has put Malaysia on the world diving map with her exploits for the past decade.

The Sarawak-born diving platform, in an interview on the official podcast of the Olympic channel, revealed that it has never had the opportunity to celebrate its birthday with loved ones since it joined the national team in 2007.

During those years, he will spend most of his time training for competitions in Kuala Lumpur or China.

“As I get more results, I tend to feel more alone.

“I spent more time diving than being with friends or family,” said Pandelela.

“Over the years, I realized that I had sacrificed much of my personal life. In fact, I have never celebrated my birthday at home since 2007, ”added the 27-year-old, who will make her fourth Olympic appearance in Tokyo next year.

Pandelela also reflected on each of her previous three Olympic starts.

She made her Beijing debut in 2008 as a 15-year-old teenager.

But it was in London 2012 that she gained attention by becoming Malaysia’s first medalist at the Games, as she won a bronze on the 10-meter individual platform.

Four years later, in Rio de Janiero, Pandelela and Cheong Jun Hoong collected a silver in the 10m synchronization.

“I did not expect to qualify for Beijing back then as I had no experience despite having done well during the playoffs.

“In London, no one expected me to bring home a medal.

“In Rio, expectations were definitely higher. I’m happy I didn’t disappoint, “he added.

When asked how she was coping with the motion control order, Pandelela said she enjoys spending time with her older brother, Pardika Indoma.

“This is the perfect time to unite as it has been a while since I spent a lot of time with him.

“We play on PlayStation and cook.

“As for my training, I only do core strengthening exercises and diving visualization techniques.”
