The Wall Street Journal is facing backlash to its December 11 op-ed that berated the incoming first lady, Dr. Jill Biden, and suggested that she drop the “Dr.” from her title during her time at the House. White
Written by Joseph Epstein, a former Northwestern University professor, the column states that “‘D. Jill Biden’ sounds and feels fraudulent, not to mention a hint of humor,” stating that because Biden has his doctorate in education, not in medicine, she should drop the title. The article also calls Biden a “boy”, suggests that someone should only be called “Dr.” if you have given birth to a child and it undermines the value of your education.
But many people on Twitter felt differently and did not hold back when it came to expressing their opinions.
Representatives for the Wall Street Journal did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment on the mounting criticism.
Although neither Biden nor her husband, President-elect Joe Biden, have publicly addressed the situation, Jill Biden’s spokesman, Michael LaRosa, criticized the sentiments of the essay and the Journal’s decision to publish it.
Addressing WSJ’s editorial features editor, LaRosa wrote on Twitter: “@jamestaranto, you and @WSJ should be ashamed to post the disgusting and sexist attack on @DrBiden on the @WSJopinion page. If I had any respect for women, you would remove this disgusting display of chauvinism from your newspaper and apologize to him. “
Hillary Clinton tweeted a simple but effective statement: “Her name is Dr. Jill Biden. Get used to it.”
Will and grace actress Debra Messing told the Wall Street Journal that her “hatred for [sic] women is showing, “and called the whole test” a disgusting display of misogyny. “
Westworld Star Jeffrey Wright also shared his take on the piece, tweeting: “Joseph Epstein tries to disparage others as ‘falsely intelligent’ in this sewer gas masturbatory piece and then put his name on. How cool is that?”
Jamaal Bowman, a Democratic representative-elect for New York’s 16th Congressional District and a former high school principal, wrote that “the removal of Dr. Jill Biden’s experience is shrouded in sexism and disrespect for the teaching profession.” . “Educators are experts,” he continued. “While we’re at it, it’s [sic] also Dr. Jamaal Bowman “.
Project Lincoln committee member David Weissman said: “Imagine having a platform on @wsj with the opportunity to use it for good, but instead you use it to insult our incoming First Lady just because you have a problem with women. powerful and educated. like #JosephEpstein, this is Dr. Jill Biden for you. ” – Reuters
