Disabled elderly man found dead after altercation in front of Alor Setar shopping center

ALOR SETAR: A physically disabled old man was found dead after a heated argument with another man in front of a shopping center in Lebuhraya Sultan Abdul Halim here.

The deceased was identified as the coconut jelly (kaya) cookie seller Chua Hock Soon @ Chua Leok Eng, 73, who resided in Batu 4 3/4, here Jalan Simpang Empat.

His body was found outside SK Suka Menanti’s concrete perimeter fence, about 10 meters from the school entrance.

Kota Setar OCPD Asst Comm Ahmad Shukri Mat Akhir said that police had received a report of an altercation between two men in the area around 4.30pm on Tuesday (February 23).

“Soon after, the police received another report that the body of a man had been found near the SK Suka Menanti fence.

Investigating officers identified the body as the man who was involved in a fight with another man previously.

“He had serious injuries to his neck and the police have arrested a suspect.

“The suspect is 30 years old, while the victim was 70 years old from Tongkang Yard. The sucpect has been guarded at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.

“The case will be investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder,” ACP Ahmad Shukri told a news conference in SK Suka Menanti on Tuesday.

“The police are investigating the motive for the murder.

“The suspect was also injured in an accident between his getaway vehicle with a motorcycle in Taman Wira Mergong here,” added ACP Ahmad Shukri.

“The suspect has a criminal record with two offenses for drug abuse and burglary, respectively.

“He is also believed to be mentally ill and a parang was found in the getaway vehicle,” he said.
