KUALA LUMPUR: Eight men, including a director of a company that repairs and sells construction machinery, have been detained for seven days from today in connection with the contamination of raw water sources in Sungai Selangor.
Magistrate Nik Mohd Fadli Azlan issued the preventive detention order against the eight, aged between 28 and 66, following a request from the police to facilitate their investigation.
The detainees were a 31-year-old company director, his 62-year-old father and six employees: two Malaysians and four foreigners from Nepal, Pakistan and Myanmar.
They are being held for investigation under Section 430 of the Penal Code for allegedly committing harm by causing a decrease in the supply of water for agricultural or drinking purposes.
The section provides for a prison term of between five and 30 years or a fine, or both, on conviction.
The eight men, who were taken to the Selayang Judicial Complex, were arrested in Rawang at 11:30 am yesterday.
Air Selangor had detected an odor from the raw water source in Sungai Selangor on Monday morning, causing the Rantau Panjang water treatment plant to stop operations.
The closure led to water supply disruptions to 1,292 areas in various districts of the Klang Valley.
