PUTRAJAYA: Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah admits that he and many of his colleagues are facing sleepless nights as the country battles the Covid-19 pandemic.
Dr. Noor Hisham said that many members of the Ministry of Health staff had suffered physical and mental exhaustion due to continuous work, with little or no breaks.
“We have been waging a non-stop war for ten months. We haven’t taken a vacation. We attend meetings that require action every day.
“Many of us in ministry, those on the ground or behind the scenes, are experiencing a high level of stress.
“This includes the chief health officer. Some nights we can’t sleep.
“We have to think about health activities to organize and find solutions to problems. Until now, we are holding on,” said Dr. Noor Hisham, during the Ministry of Health’s Covid-19 press conference here on Wednesday (October 28 ).
He was asked about the stress ministry workers and leaders faced during the pandemic.
Dr Noor Hisham said that despite the severity of the Covid-19 outbreak in Sabah now, the ministry’s health workers were able to stay positive.
“I had a video conference this morning with the Sabah health experts and we were discussing solutions to the state’s problems.
“In general, many of them are still in a good mood,” said Dr. Noor Hisham.
To reduce stress, Dr. Noor Hisham said that job rotation is important as it allows staff to have free time and rest.
“We need to be smart about our work hours and allow for rotation so that our workers can have a break.
“Although sometimes we still find it difficult to really rest, since we could be awake at 3 or 4 in the morning thinking about how to solve problems.” Said Dr. Noor Hisham.
