Carl Pei is a prominent figure in the mobile technology industry, with OnePlus co-founder largely featured during the recent OnePlus Nord build documentary. Along with fellow co-founder Pete Lau, Pei has been the face of OnePlus since the heady early days with OnePlus One, the smartphone that started it all for the company.
However, it seems that Pei has left OnePlus. First discussed in Reddit Based on a couple of leaked internal staff memos, the co-founder’s departure has been confirmed by multiple reports, with Android Police reporting that Pei is leaving for his “own company”.
In the leaked memos, allegedly distributed among OnePlus staff, Pei’s name was conspicuously absent in several prominent positions. The original poster in Reddit He also claims that Pei was possibly fired, although OnePlus has not confirmed this.
In fact, OnePlus has yet to release an official statement on the matter, and Carl Pei’s official Twitter and Facebook accounts continue to have links to OnePlus. The OnePlus Nord, the latest release Pei featured prominently in, now has a new global product manager as well.
For now, Pete Lau continues in his role as CEO of OnePlus. Lau is also responsible for matters related to parent company Oppo, although it is understood that Carl Pei is not following in his footsteps to remain in the Oppo ecosystem.
The departure could be a nasty surprise for fans of the OnePlus brand. Pei has built a reputation for clever marketing strategies over the years and has been pretty much the face of the brand to begin with. Perhaps the company is moving in a different direction, different from the original flagship killer, the OnePlus One.
