PETALING JAYA: Candidates from Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Vokasional Malaysia (SVM) 2020 will not have face-to-face classes starting February 10.
This is to allow them to go on vacation for the Chinese New Year and also to study on their own before the exam begins on February 22.
In a circular dated February 4, the Director General of Education, Datuk Dr Habibah Abdul Rahim (Photo) said schools can hold additional classes during this time until exams are completed if necessary.
These additional classes would require permission from parents, guardians and teachers, he added.
“The school must always adhere to all standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the spread of Covid-19 among the school community,” he said.
A review by The Star revealed that in addition to the exam candidates, elementary and middle school students will have two additional days off starting on February 10, followed by the Chinese New Year public holiday on February 12 and 13.
Habibah also said that those living in boarding schools and shelters can go home for the Chinese New Year.
However, he added that his ride home is subject to current motion control order regulations.
“These candidates who return to their shelters after the Chinese New Year will be isolated for 10 days. They will also sit for their examinations in a special room during this period,” he said.
Habibah said that candidates who do not wish to return to their shelters after the break can sit for their exams at the nearest exam center.
He added that the parents of these candidates must inform the school before February 9 if their child will not return to the shelter.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Malaysian Parliament’s Special Committee on Education, Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias, questioned the Ministry of Education’s motives for stopping face-to-face classes when they had just resumed.
“What methods will the teacher use in the 14 days leading up to this exam to help students?” it said in a statement on Saturday (February 6).
