PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia recorded 11 deaths from Covid-19 in a 24-hour period, just one figure less than the daily record of deaths caused by this virus in the country.

The highest number of deaths from Covid-19 in one day was recorded exactly one month ago, on November 3.

Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said the 11 deaths involved seven women and five men, all Malays.

“With the addition of 11 death cases from Covid-19, this brings the total deaths in the country to 376, or 0.54% of the case count,” said Dr. Noor Hisham in a statement.

The deaths affected people between the ages of 50 and 81, and most suffered from comorbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

Five of the cases were reported at Sungai Buloh Hospital in Selangor, while two were reported at Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan, Sabah. Two other deaths were reported at Enche ‘Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital, Kluang, in Johor.

The remaining deaths were recorded at Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital, Kota Baru in Kelantan and Tuanku Jaafar Hospital in Seremban, Negri Sembilan.

Dr. Noor Hisham said there are 116 patients currently battling the virus in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), and 46 of them require respiratory support.

The number of daily cases of Covid-19 returned to four figures, with 1,075 new infections more confirmed yesterday by the Ministry of Health.

Three of the cases were imported infections, while the others were locally transmitted.

Selangor is the state with the highest number of new cases with 459, followed by Sabah with 310 and Johor, 78.

Since the pandemic began, Malaysia has recorded 69,095 Covid-19 cases.

There are currently 10,802 people receiving treatment for Covid-19 across the country.

Dr Noor Hisham also said that 948 Covid-19 patients were discharged yesterday, bringing total recoveries to 57,917.

The Ministry of Health has detected four new Covid-19 clusters: three in Sabah and one in Selangor.

The Monzón group in Petaling, Selangor, has 19 cases and their index case tested positive after developing symptoms.

Perdana Enam’s group in Lahad Datu has so far 25 cases, while Jalan Kubota’s group in Tawau has 14 confirmed cases.

The Jalan Kilang cluster in Lahad Datu has 24 cases linked to it and they were detected from a Covid-19 detection exercise conducted on factory workers.
