PETALING JAYA: A Singapore-based developer of an Islamic prayer app has dismissed claims that it sold its users’ personal information to the US military, dismissing those reports as “incorrect and false.”
The Straits Times reported that Muslim Pro Community Head Zahariah Jupary stated the following, the protection and respect of its users was his “top priority”.
“As one of the most trusted Muslim apps in the past 10 years, we adhere to the strictest privacy standards and data protection regulations, and we never share any personally identifiable information,” the Singapore daily said.
With the reputation of being the “world’s most popular Muslim app”, Muslim Pro lists the prayer times and shows you the address of Mecca based on your location.
It also provides audio recordings of the Quran.
Earlier today it was reported that Muslim Pro, which has been downloaded at least 95 million times in 200 countries, had sold its users’ location data to X-Mode.
It was then sold to third parties who allegedly turned it over to the US military.
The data that was allegedly purchased included location information, as well as the name of the Wi-Fi networks that users were connected to.
The app’s developer, Bitsmedia, told ST that it will “immediately terminate its relationships with its data partners,” although they did not elaborate.
Meanwhile, other reports say that Bitsmedia had cut all ties with X-Mode and other data partners.
Vice Media, a US-Canadian digital media company, reported that the US military purchased Muslim Pro’s data through X-Mode, a third-party data broker.
