Detection of workers remains the main concern

PETALING JAYA: Although they celebrate the extension of the conditional movement control order (MCO), the manufacturers and the group of workers say that their main concern is the detection of workers, especially foreigners.

Given that Covid-19 is a significant health risk, they think that it is pragmatic to have workers who feel safe to return to work, since the sectors are allowed to operate in stages.

Malaysian Manufacturers Federation (FMM) President Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai said that all employers should have all their employees screened for the virus.

“The government must ensure that there are enough rapid test kits for all approved clinics to perform worker evaluation.

“The number of laboratories and hospitals recognized by the Ministry of Health should be expanded and included in the Socso Prihatin Screening Program to allow more workers to be screened quickly,” he said, referring to the free Covid-19 screening program of the Organization of Social Security for the registered. workers, including foreigners.

Soh said the decision to extend the conditional MCO until June 9 was a step in the right direction of prioritizing public health while allowing most commercial activities to resume.

He called on manufacturers to implement business continuity planning, including exploring and expanding flexible work arrangements, maintaining social distancing, and other policies that allowed people to work remotely and safely.

“The operations of sectors and businesses under the conditional MCO will continue to be governed by the respective standard operating procedure and precautionary measures.

“The business community, in particular, must continue to strictly adhere to these requirements to ensure that operations are conducted in a safe and controlled manner,” he said.

Malaysian Trade Union Congress President Datuk Abdul Halim Mansor said the issue of the required review for the entire local workforce returning to work was not addressed in Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s speech yesterday.

“Have all the employers done it? It is also worrying if employers have performed the same mandatory assessment for all foreign workers, “he said.

Citing the recent emergence of a new group of foreign workers and the improvement of the MCO in the area surrounding the Jalan Othman market here, he said the cases showed that strict measures were needed to combat the pandemic.

“Employers should not object and think that their foreign workers need not be screened for the virus, making excuses like the high cost.

“Such an attitude is regrettable,” he said, adding that there were more than three million foreign workers who had been legally hired by industries based on need.

Abdul Halim noted that the Prime Minister must emphasize to employers that they must bear the cost of the hyssop test for all foreign workers, especially those who did not contribute to Socso.

“Employers’ cooperation has so far been lukewarm. Perhaps the authority may have a daily update on the number of employers that have sent their foreign workers for the hyssop test to track whether they adhere to the rules and regulations. “, said.
