MIRI: Police arrested a 24-year-old man for violating his self-quarantine order at a hotel here on three different occasions.
The local man was taken into custody on Monday (November 30) evening and has been placed in preventive detention for three days starting Tuesday (December 1).
He had been quarantined in a city hotel after returning to Miri from a high-risk Covid-19 destination on November 16.
However, it was discovered that he had left the hotel on three different days for several hours in a row.
According to police, CCTV footage from the hotel showed that he had left the hotel on November 20 and was away for about six hours before returning to his hotel room.
He left the hotel again on November 21 for about three hours.
On November 22, he left the hotel once more in the evening.
On Monday (November 30), the police arrested him after his quarantine ended and placed him on remand.
In their request for pre-trial detention to the Miri Magistrates Court, the police said the man is being investigated under Section 269 of the Penal Code and Section 22 of the Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control Act of 1988.
Police said the man claimed he had violated his quarantine to visit his family.
Section 269 states that those guilty of negligent and illegal acts that can cause the spread of infectious diseases can be jailed for up to six months or fined or both.
There have already been several different cases of people under surveillance at Miri hotels who were found wandering around the city after they managed to get out of the hotels undetected.
