Deputy Minister’s Comment on Veveonah Simply Highlights Reality of Sabah’s Internet Divide, Says Youth Council

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Youth Council says the situation facing Veveonah Mosibin in rural Pitas is not surprising, as some areas of the state still have poor internet connectivity.

His Vice President Abqaree Fawwaz Abekan (Photo) said this while expressing his disappointment with Vice Minister of Communications and Multimedia Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin, who has since apologized to the 18-year-old Universiti Malaysia Sabah student after falsely accusing her of lying to gain online fame during a session of Dewan Negara.

Abqaree said the incident reflected that there is even more need to improve connectivity in Sabah.

He said he welcomed Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s announcement during a visit to Sabah last week that the federal government would improve communication systems and the Internet in the state.

“Even though he (Zahidi) had apologized, this statement was really disappointing, as it is not just about Veveonah, but about the reality of the internet breach in Sabah.

“Let’s not talk about Pitas, which is a remote area in Sabah, even several areas in Kota Kinabalu still don’t have a satisfactory internet connection, so what can you expect in the inner and rural districts?

“I urge him (Zahidi) to be more careful when making statements that may offend the people of Sabah,” Abqaree said in a statement on Friday (September 4).

He said that what the ministry in particular should do is speed up broadband projects in Sabah, especially in rural areas, so that the digital divide can be bridged.
