Among the Hollywood stars who have paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman after succumbing to cancer is Denzel Washington.
Washington praised the Black Panther starred in a statement yesterday, August 29: “He was a gentle soul and a brilliant artist, who will remain with us for eternity through his iconic performances during his short but illustrious career.”
Washington had a special connection to Boseman: he paid for the latter’s studies in the British American Drama Academy summer program at Oxford University.
Boseman began directing at Howard University and enrolled in acting classes. One of his teachers was Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show) which encouraged students to study theater in the British American Drama Academy summer program at Oxford University.
When Boseman and his classmates couldn’t afford the program, Rashad turned to famous friends to sponsor them. He only revealed in a February 2018 interview with Rolling Stone that his benefactor was Washington.
Boseman was finally able to tell Washington about his act of kindness during a Black Panther premiere in New York, a story he recalled at the Tonight’s show in March 2018. Training Day star joked, “Oh that’s why I’m here! You owe me money!”
So when Boseman said, “There is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington, ”he was also being literal.
One of the late actor’s last films was Ma Rainey’s black ass, set in Chicago in 1927 and based on the work of Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson. It also happens to be produced by Washington. – Philippine Daily Inquirer / Asia News Network
