Dbrand is making black PlayStation 5 faceplates, challenges Sony to sue them

The Sony PlayStation 5 game console currently ships with white faceplates. If you want your PS5 to have a completely black exterior, renowned leather company Dbrand just announced their own PlayStation 5 skins that come in matte black.

There are no pricing details yet and Dbrand says they will only accept orders when they have enough stock at their Toronto headquarters. They shared that the faceplates will go into mass production later this year and will be available in 2021. They are offering two versions to cover the digital and disk editions.

If you want to be the first to know when you can place an order, you can leave your details here. Dbrand also added that they will offer option packages that include mid-driver skins once their faceplates are available for purchase.

Before the PS5 hit shelves around the world, the company had taken pre-orders for its custom PS5 skins. Unfortunately, they canceled all pre-orders as they weren’t satisfied with the final look of the PS5 with skin as chunks of white are still visible.

It’s also worth noting that a UK-based company had previously tried to sell custom PS5 faceplates online, however Sony sued them for trademark infringement. Apparently they thought it wouldn’t be a problem, as Sony only had patents pending on the faceplates. It turns out that Sony’s intellectual property extended to faceplates and Sony would take the custom faceplate company to court if they continued to sell them.

When asked if Dbrand was concerned about possible legal problems with Sony, the famous robot Dbrand replied “We encourage you to give it a try.” Another person also asked Dbrand what his plan was not to be sued, they replied “Nice try Sony”.

We are also equally curious to know how Dbrand is circumventing IP issues. What we do know is that they do not feature the PS5 logo and there may be a slight design change to differentiate themselves from Sony-produced plates.

At the moment, the PS5 is still hard to come by and Sony didn’t even restock its stock during its official launch in Malaysia. In short, the PS5 digital edition is priced at RM1,869 and the Ultra HD Blu-ray drive version is priced at RM2,299.
