DBKL: billboard displays in KL need to be vetted by DBP

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Any party that wants to install a billboard in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur needs Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) to review it on the correct use of Bahasa Melayu.

The Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) said other languages ​​can be used on billboards, as long as they accompany key phrases in Bahasa Melayu.

“In the issuance of a billboard erected near the Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur, as was the case, it was found that the relevant parties did not comply with the issued approval. The billboard that was approved by DBP was in Bahasa Melayu as the main language and accompanied by other languages.

“However, when the billboard was installed on the site, there was a breach of the approval granted, when the accompanying languages ​​had become the main expression.

“Realizing that a mistake had been made, the relevant party had uninstalled said billboard,” according to the DBKL statement on Sunday (September 6).

Previously, the topic of the billboard near Mid Valley Megamall went viral on social media sites, because it did not feature Bahasa Melayu as the primary language of expression. It also received the attention of the Minister of Federal Territories, Tan Sri Annuar Musa, on Twitter.

The statement also said that there are six types of advertising licenses in Kuala Lumpur issued by DBKL, and the outdoor display advertising license is one of them.

“This outdoor display advertising license is subject to the Local Government Act 1976; Streets, Drainage and Construction Act 1974; Advertisements (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) Statutes 1982 and Local Government (Election Notice) ( Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) Statute of 1990.

“Any breach of these Bylaws may be subject to enforcement actions or sanctions as stipulated,” the statement said. – Bernama
