David de Gea was replaced by Dean Henderson at halftime during Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Southampton.
De Gea’s knee appeared to hit the post as he rushed to try and save James Ward-Prowse’s precise free kick to no avail.
Ward-Prow’s goal put the Saints up 2-0 at St Mary’s after Jan Bednarek opened the scoring with a header.
De Gea was able to finish the remaining 12 minutes of time, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was forced to make the substitution at half-time.
The United manager faces a nervous wait for news of the severity of the injury suffered by his number one.
De Gea has started all nine of the Red Devils’ Premier League games this season and in all but one of the Champions League group stage games.
Meanwhile, Henderson entered his fourth appearance with United and his first with the club in the Premier League.
The 23-year-old, who signed a lucrative new contract last summer, has seen limited action this season, but Solskjaer insists he is happy with his substitute status at Old Trafford.
